Designer’s Buying Group (DBG) which is located in Jupiter, FL., as well as the DCOTA (Design Center of the Americas) located in Dania Beach. I am planning a trip to High Point in April; it will be my first time!! As an eclectic designer, I like to seek out vintage and antique items as well. One of my favorite areas to shop is antique row in West Palm Beach, Florida. I love integrating unique pieces into each project. I am not afraid to hit up a thrift shop or consignment store, you never know what you will discover! Sometimes a coat of paint is all it takes to breathe new life into a tired piece.
Do you use the computer to learn about rugs?
The Internet is a wonderful resource when seeking design inspiration, as well as for researching the latest and greatest products. Recently while seeking a dhurrie rug for a client I visited the Capel website. I was able to preview their current collections from my design studio. I saved a lot of time and was able to request swatches prior to placing an order.
What feature in the rug is most important to you?
Depending on the overall design of a space I am working to achieve, the importance of the various features a rug offers will vary. If the rug is taking center stage, then color, pattern, material, and pile win every time. If the rug is meant only to create texture and warmth, then a natural fiber rug may do the job. It really is a matter of form versus function.
Do you purchase a custom rug often?
I recently used Flor carpet tiles in two children’s rooms as an inexpensive way to install wall-to-wall carpet with the look of a rug. I am fond of Flor because their product is environmentally friendly, does not off-gas (no glue used) and has limitless creative possibilities. I look forward to the day when I will have the opportunity to design a complete custom rug from concept to completion, colors, pattern, and all (see photos on page).
Do you have a particular trick to bring a dull room to life?
I am definitely a designer who lives for, and is inspired by, color. As a former fashion designer, I have a love of fabric. When the direction of a project is unclear, I typically start with a trip to the fabric showrooms for inspiration. There is never a shortage of OMG moments!
Can you offer any suggestion to rug importers or dealers?
Keep up the good work!
