Kate Wagner, the 23-year-old behind the popular blog McMansion Hell, has done what few people in the world of interior design and architecture have been able to do. She utterly skewers contemporary home design, both the architecture and the interior spaces, for how bad they are and she keep doing it with example after example after example. She also intersperses the critiques with guides to good design and urban form, so you are guaranteed to learn something.
These houses represent design in America, and just how bad it can be. As a Rug Magazine we responded to example after example of great rooms, living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, hallways, dens that have beautiful rugs that fail at making the room more attractive. Don’t get us wrong, there are some ugly rugs in the mix, but most often the rug is badly sized, too small, badly positioned, and the wrong color for the room.
You should care about what passes for design in some homes! Remember some interior designer helped make these rooms happen and they have been prepped for the listing. Read her blog, laugh and then recognize that these are large homes that are for sale now (or in the last year or so.)
The two pictures are examples of the fantastic snarky critic that Kate has for McMansions. We think you can learn a lot from the blog, and have fun along the way.
